#189: Come on skinny love give me some magic
Prompt: #189
Title: Come on skinny love give me some magic
Pairing: Chen/Sehun
Rating: pg
Word count: 12654
Summary: Sehun has always been weird, strange different. Then comes Jongdae and suddenly the world involves a little bit more magic.
Author's note: Idek what happened to this fic but hopefully the prompter will like it anyway, sorry if it’s to rushed <3
Pre Hoggy (Hogwarts)
Sehun has always been weird. When he was little he was weird when he went on family trips with dad and papa. People used to look at them twice, stared at their little family with mixed reactions. Most looked happily surprised, some looked at Sehun with pity or frowned at his parents.
"It's the UK in the 20th century, how can some still be so narrow-minded?!" His dad would whisper and squeeze Sehun's hand a little too hard.
Sehun never understood what he meant, just quietly accepted that there was something not quite right with him and moved on happily, until the second day of kinder garden when a kid called him “freak child” and said something about his parents being “unnatural”. Sehun hadn’t understood and his teacher had uncomfortably explained that his parents where so called homosexuals and that their relationship was seen as unnatural by some people. Sehun didn’t understand why his dad’s and papa’s love for each other was unnatural, sure they weren’t the traditional man and woman couple but he didn’t see why it was wrong? Sehun’s parents seemed to agree with this and got very upset when he told them what had happened. They had a long conversation with his kinder garden teacher about equality and bullying school policies (whatever that meant) and that the kid that had called him a freak was told to stop.
Not that he actually stopped after that.
He kept calling Sehun names and laugh at him when the teachers weren’t looking. He had friends and Sehun didn’t so no one stopped him. Sehun figured that’s just the way of life.
And the way of life made him angry,
So angry that the bully somehow ended up in a tree on the kindergarten yard without pants and red hair. His friends swore up and down that it was Sehun’s fault (“We were just talking and he got mad and pointed at him and flew him up in that tree!”) but since Sehun wasn’t strong enough to carry the much larger boy up into a tree while simultaneously dye his hair red and take off his pants, he was simply let off with a warning.
However, the rumours spread around the kinder gardeners and soon he was avoided like plague by all. Sehun didn’t really mind, it was better than the previous bullying, but he still felt lonely.
And then came Jongdae.
Jongdae was 7 at that time and tiny. He went to the primary school close to Sehun’s kindergarten and found Sehun trying to turn back the flower he accidently turned into a stick by shaking it vigorously, only causing the stick to change colour from pink to blue.
“Don’t bother” Jongdae had said cheerfully. “Stuff like that happens to me too, I can never turn them back but no one believes that I did it anyway so it doesn’t matter, you won’t get into trouble.” He had then squatted down beside a stunned Sehun and poked him in the cheek with a frown. “Why are you not saying anything? Do you have troubles speaking? My mom says that some people do and that you then have to wait for them to take their time to talk. Or they won’t talk at all and that’s okay too, although my dad said that if they don’t talk then their rude bastards. I don’t think mom liked that he said that because she hit him on the head afterwards. I think the point is that she thinks that I talk too much and that I should learn to listen to people. That is usually her point.” He had continued before he’d sat down fully on the ground, legs crossed, and looked at Sehun with a look of deep concentration that was very unsettling and made Sehun nervous.
“What are you doing?” Sehun had mumbled after several minutes when Jongdae made no sign of moving or stopping his staring.
“Listening to you” The older boy had answered with a bright smile.
“I am not talking” Sehun had pointed out.
“I know, it’s making the whole listening thing pretty hard. You should talk more, not like me because my mom says that it makes me some fancy word that starts with an o and has a lot of x’s in it and isn’t good. But you could introduce yourself, for example: I am Jongdae, I am 7 and I talk too much, what about you?”
“Sehun” Sehun whispers. “And I am 5 and I am unnatural.” Jongdae nodded sympathisingly and had placed a hand on his shoulder.
“It’s because you don’t talk enough, isn’t it?” He’d said solemnly and although Sehun was pretty sure that that wasn’t the case he’d nodded because he figured that maybe Jongdae would stay a little longer if he did. Jongdae’s smile at him was blinding. “Don’t worry though, I can teach you how to talk, I am very good at talking.”
In the end Jongdae had talked a majority of the time that day and Sehun hadn’t learned a lot about talking about himself, but that was okay because he got to listen to Jongdae. Jongdae was funny and interesting and had a way of making sense out of everything. Sehun wasn’t weird and he wasn’t unnatural. He was Sehun that should eat more and that had cool parents and that was not at all slightly taller than Jongdae (yes he was). With Jongdae it wasn’t odd that he accidently made leaves turn purple and grapes pink because Jongdae turned water yellow and grass dark blue. They fit together, like strawberries and cream and ice cream on a summer’s day. Jongdae was his best friend, his only friend and the only person (except for dad and papa) that mattered.
When Sehun was 8 he slowly started to learn how he could control his abilities. He learned to fix Jongdae’s glasses and how to make the grass under Jongdae’s feet yellow because it was his favourite colour without turning the entire field into the sun. Jongdae still couldn’t control his abilities but it didn’t matter because Sehun thought he was amazing anyway.
“I am going to be with Jongdae forever.” Sehun told his parents at dinner because he figured that they should know since they normally didn’t like when he didn’t tell them things.
“Are you sure you won’t find other friends?” His papa tried with a smile and an exchanged amused look with the love of his life. “And life is unpredictable Sehun, maybe Jongdae won’t always be around.”
“Yes he will” Sehun answered stubbornly. “We’ll be like you and dad but better, all our lives.”
His dad had laughed at this and ruffled his hair fondly.
“I don’t think anyone cvan be better than your old folks Sehun” His dad said with a wink as his papa grimaced “And you will notice other people in your life Sehunnie. Like girls for example!”
“Why would I notice girls?” Sehun answered with a pout. “They are scary. And I don’t need them.”
“If you say so.” His papa chuckled “Let’s hope Jongdae stays around forever.”
“He will” Sehun said with confidence as his parents looked at him with fondness.
Because they knew that 8 year olds know remarkably less than they think they do, even intelligent, fast-learners like Oh Sehun.
And of course Jongdae couldn’t stay in Brighton forever.
“What do you mean you’re leaving?”
Jongdae looks slightly apologetic. Mostly excited.
“It’s a wizard school Sehun! How cool is that?! For people like us, the man told me that it’s like a castle in Scotland for wizard kids. It’s called Hogwarts, you should have seen my mom’s face! I can’t tell anyone about it though, mom is going to lie to the entire family and all her friends that I’m leaving for an unknown boarding school on the countryside!” He’s almost jumping out of his swing in excitement.
“Then why are you telling me all this” Sehun asks and kicks the ground angrily. It comes out a lot grumpier than he meant to and the excitement in Jongdae’s eyes dies a little. Sehun feels a little bad but a whole lot more betrayed so he just kicks the ground again.
“Because you’ll be joining me in 2 years’ time anyway” Jongdae answers and tries a smile at Sehun.
“2 years is too long time. I’ll be stuck here while you’re making new friends in some weirdo school in Scotland” Sehun knows he’s being ridiculous but he can’t help it. This is Jongdae and Jongdae is important and more importantly leaving Sehun.
“Don’t be like this Sehun” Jongdae whines and Sehun stubbornly looks away from him. “Be positive! Distance makes the heart grow fond, remember? So we’ll just be even more friends than we are now when I leave!”
“You’ve misunderstood the expression Jongdae” Sehun mumbles grumpily but Jongdae just puts a hand on his jaw and moves Sehuns head to look at him again with a grin.
“Oh whatever. The important thing is that I’m not leaving you. I’m just trying to make you grow even fonder of me!” He says with an eyebrow wiggle before tackling Sehun with a hug. Sehun’s not prepared and they fall to the floor, all the air leaving Sehun’s lungs as Jongdae lands on top of him.
And when Jongdae looks down at him with a cheeky smile and pokes his cheek, Sehun’s pretty sure that there’s no way he can turn fonder of Jongdae.
Sehun spends 2 years without Jongdae. 2 years where he only sees Jongdae during the breaks, crying on the older boys shoulder every time he comes and every time he leaves and spends the rest of the time pouting about that he can’t go to Hogwarts yet. Jongdae tells him everything about the school and the lectures and his new friends (that Sehun hates. Sehun hasn’t made any new friends.). He talks about the sorting ceremony and all about his house, Gryffindor, and the common room and the quidditch tournament (“It’s like wizard world football but cooler!”) and the house cup.
Sehun tells Jongdae that Brighton is Darkton without him.
Jongdae just laughs, pats Sehun’s heads and says that his letter will come sometime around his birthday.
And it does, 2 years and 1 day too late, the day after Sehun’s 11th birthday, the 13th of April. It’s 6 p.m and Sehun has been sitting outside on the porch since morning, refusing to move except for lunch even though his papa threatened to take away his Xbox forever if he didn’t come back inside, when a man walks down the street towards their house. Sehun narrows his eyes as the man opens their small gate and takes in the stranger’s appearance critically. He doesn’t look like a wizard professor, not at all like the long-bearded, old man Sehun expected. He’s in his forties and wears a normal-looking, grey costume. He looks kind, with brown eyes and brown hair, and there is nothing about him that gives any indication of magic. He smiles pleasantly as he sees Sehun sitting on the porch.
Sehun hesitates but asks anyway:
“Are you from Hogwarts?”
The man stops abruptly.
“Pardon me?” He asks, looking partly confused and partly suspicious, so Sehun tries again.
“Are you from Hogwarts?” Sehun repeats patiently.
“Well..” The man hesitates “Yes, but I…”
“Good!” Sehun breathes out in relief, not meaning to be rude by irrupting the other but unable to contain himself. He smiles and stands up to open the door. “Welcome, I have been waiting all day.” He says and holds the door open for the stranger.
“I assume that you’re Oh Sehun?” The man asks and slowly walks up to Sehun and in through the door. Sehun nods and the man continues. “I must say that I am surprised that you knew that I was going to visit. Muggle born students aren’t supposed to be aware of Hogwarts before a teacher, like me arrives with the information. I’m just wondering how, oh hello.” The teacher irrupts himself as Sehun’s dad walks out of the kitchen and hastily reaches forward a hand to introduce himself. “I apologize for intruding. My name is Nevil Longbottom, professor at Hogwarts, a school for people with extraordinary abilities. Sehun has the right qualities to go to our school and I am wondering if you have a moment to talk?”
“Of course!” Mr.Oh says and shakes the professor’s hand. “Sehun has been waiting all day so I am more relived that you have arrived than anything. Apparently Jongdae had told him that someone from Hogwarts were supposed to visit yesterday or today so he refused to do anything but wait for your arrival.” He says with an eyeroll and a fond smile directed towards his son.
Professor Longbottom seems surprised by this and he looks confused as Sehun’s dad guides him into the living room, where Sehun’s papa is lazily watching the TV. He’s served a cup of tea and some biscuits and they all settle down in the living room.
“I must ask, are we talking about Kim Jongdae? From Gryffindor?” Professor Longbottom starts, sipping his tea. “Because students are not allowed to talk about magic or Hogwarts to anyone except their guardians outside of the wizard world. As you might understand non-wizards and non-witches are not supposed to know about our existence.” He explains.
“But Sehun is a wizard right? So he is a part of the wizard world and we are his guardians, which means Jongdae shouldn’t be in any trouble?” Sehun’s papa asks, exchanging an unsure look with his partner.
“Well I guess it’s alright now” Professor Longbottom still looks a bit uncomfortable. “But Jongdae could of course not have known before I arrived that Sehun is a wizard?”
“But he did! We have grown up together and used magic together, although Jondae can’t control it” Sehun explains before his parents can respond. There is a moment of silence and Professor Longbottoms expression changes into something unreadable.
“And you can control your abilities?” The professor asks Sehun slowly and the boy nods.
“But only partly” He says. “For example, I can lift your teacup” He demonstrates this as he holds out his hand and make the white cup rise some inches up in the air. “But if I try to move it to the sides it will most likely do something else.” He explains and puts the cup down again.
A long silence fills the room. Professor Longbottom stares at his teacup with a strange look as the members of the Oh family squirms nervously in their seats.
“Is…Is something wrong Professor?” Sehun’s dad asks after a minute or so of dead silence. Professor Longbottom snaps his eyes away from the cup and blinks at them.
“What? No, no not at all I was just a little surprised” He says a little too quickly and fixes his suit. “Should we talk about Hogwarts then?” He says, sounding a little distressed as he quickly picks up a bag that Sehun could have sworn didn’t stand there for 2 minutes ago. He exchanges confused looks with his parents but says nothing as Professor Longbottom starts explaining about Hogwarts, Diagon alley and platform 9 ¾. Sehun already knows most of what the Professor says and his focus drifts.
Jongdae hadn’t mentioned that Sehun’s ability to control magic before he went to Hogwarts was abnormal but seeing the reaction from Professor Longbottom, Sehun’s starting to think that normal, muggleborn soon-to-be Hogwarts students doesn’t make cups fly on their first visit from a Hogwarts Professor. Now that he thinks about it Jongdae was never able to control any magic prior to Hogwarts. With a sinking feeling in his stomach Sehun realises that maybe he’ll come to Hogwarts and be just as different as he’s always been.
Year 1
The trip to Hogwarts is a mess. Sehun’s and Jongdae’s parents follow them to the train and Sehun’s dad sniffs and wipes his eyes the entire time while Sehun’s papa tries to comfort him while simultaneously asking Sehun a thousand questions (“Did you remember your toothbrush? Do you have the ticket professor Longbottom gave you?”). Sehun answers his questions absentmindedly while he’s practically bouncing in his seat in the cab. They reach the station and get through the brick wall to platform 9 ¾ with maximal fuss, Sehun’s papa repeats the instructions they got from Professor Longbottom at least 50 times and Jongdae’s mom joins Sehun’s dads sniffing after trying to comfort him and for reasons neither Sehun nor Jongdae understands they’re suddenly surrounded by sniffing and teary eyed adults.
Sehun still spends at least 10 minutes trying to pretend he’s all suave and wants to leave his fussing parents while really he’s not too sure about leaving anymore. Jongdae waits patiently further away until they have to get on the train. Sehun has a strange, panicky feeling in his chest that only lets up a little as Jongdae takes his hand and doubles as he goes on the train.
“Come on Sehun, I swear you’ll be fine. I’ll be here to protect you!” Jongdae says with a sunny smile as they find an empty coupe to sit in.
Sehun still waves to his parents as the train starts moving and doesn’t stop until he can’t see them anymore. Just as he turns around the doors to their coupe slam open and a small, kinda cute guy and a boy who looks like someone suddenly took him by the head and toes and stretched, leaving him gangly and tall, walks in.
“Dae! Long time no see, how was your summer?” The short one says before he sees Sehun and stops. “Oh, is this Sehun?” He asks Jongdae and Sehun frowns.
“Yeah, Baekhyun this is Sehun, Sehun this is my friend Baekhyun. Behind him is my other friend Chanyeol.”
“Hello, we’re Jongdae’s Best friends, nice to meet you.” Baekhyun says with a large grin as he shakes Sehun’s hand.
Sehun decides that he doesn’t like Baekhyun.
He also realises that Chanyeol can’t really control his face, or any other part of his body really. He’s dumb, sort of annoying and overly hyped. When the lady with the food comes to their coupe he hits Sehun in the face as he hurries towards her. Sehun still likes him better than Baekhyun. Baekhyun clings to Jongdae most of the trip and takes all his attention with his constant chattering. Sehun has never heard someone talk that much, which is weird since he’s BEST friends with Jongdae.
All in all Sehun doesn’t understand what Jongdae sees in the two guys. Why is he friends with Chanyeol? And Baekhyun? None of them are smart, nice or funny and most of all Jongdae’s not supposed to have other friends.
Sehun spend most of the ride sulking in the corner of the coupe, even when Jongdae tries to engage him in the conversation or talk to him about which house he’ll get in.
“You have time to talk to the hat right?” Sehun says and Chanyeol nods enthusiastically beside him while wiping chocolate from around his mouth. “Then I’ll just convince it to put me in Gryffindor.”
“Sehun it doesn’t work like that” Jongdae tries with a small smile.
“Nope, you can’t convince the hat if it’s completely sure. Mostly it just waits a while if it’s unsure about where to put you, like if it’s considering both Ravenclaw and Slytherin for example” Baekhyun explains with a grin.
“Yeah like with me!” Chanyeol chips in. “It really considered both Gryffindor and Hufflepuff for a while but then it decided that Ravenclaw was the best for me.” He continues and Sehun stares at him.
“Isn’t Ravenclaw the house of the intelligent?” He asks and takes in the lingering traces of chocolate around Chanyeol’s mouth.
“Yeah, we thought the sorting hat had gone insane first” Baekhyun pipes in. “But then he somehow got the highest grade in most of his classes so I guess that hat really knows what it’s doing.”
Chanyeol doesn’t even look bothered by Baekhyun being rude and just keeps eating his chocolate frogs. Sehun is still not convinced.
“If he can get into Ravenclaw I can get into Gryffindor” He mumbles and Jongdae breaks out in roaring laughter. Chanyeol actually looks slightly insulted at this.
They reach Hogwarts not long afterwards. They’ve changed into their new robes and Sehun gets separated from the rest and is forced to take a boat over the lake to the castle. Sehun sees no point in this particular tradition but the large, old man meeting them named Hagrid meeting is nice so Sehun spends the boat ride talking to him and has a decent ride even though he’s pretty cold. At least it’s not raining. They reach the castle and are lead up the stairs and waits in front of the huge doors before they’re let in to the hall. Sehun is completely captivated by the ceiling and has a hard time taking his eyes off it. He almost walks into a girl as they stop in front of the teachers table as he marvels at the stars above him. He spots Professor Longbottom next to the headmaster, an old woman with a sharp face and sharper eyes, and smiles at him when their eyes meet. The Professor smiles back and Sehun suddenly wonders what he teaches. He forgot to ask earlier. The sorting hat is placed on a chair in front of them and a small man starts calling out their names one by one.
Sehun’s not nervous. He’s got it all figured out. As soon as the sorting hat touches his head he’ll tell it exactly why he should be in Gryffindor. He might not be the bravest out there but he has a strong sense of justice and can be brave when protecting the people he loves.
That should be enough if he just words it correctly.
His name is called, he walks up to the chair and take a seat. The hat slowly sinks down on his head and Sehun is ready. He takes a deep breathe, prepares his speech and…
“RAVENCLAW!”
What?!
Sehun is pretty sure that the sorting hat barely touched his hair and he’s too confused and shocked to react as the old teacher takes the hat off his head and ushers him towards one of the tables in the grand hall. Some boys not much older than he makes room for him in between them and pat him on the back as they welcome him to Ravenclaw, unknowing of the inner turmoil occurring in their new comrade’s head. Disappointment fills Sehun and he barely hears the rest of the sorting, only stares down at the table with an increasingly large frown on his face.
“Hey” Sehun looks up as a hand is put on his shoulder and meets kind, brown eyes. “You okay?”
“I was supposed to be in Gryffindor” Sehun pouts to the boy beside him. He knows he sounds childish but he can’t help it. He was supposed to start Hogwarts to be with Jongdae, stay in the same common room as Jongdae and sit by the same table as Jongdae.
And now that is all destroyed.
Things doesn’t get better as the boy besides him lets out a pearly laugh and shows off his perfect, gleamingly white teeth. Sehun’s frown deepens. He doesn’t like being laughed at.
“Well I’m pretty sure you wasn’t since the sorting hat barely had to touch your head to understand that you’re a Ravenclaw. You must be really smart.” The boy says with a wink and extend his hand. “I’m Kim Joonmyun by the way.”
“Oh Sehun” Sehun answers and shakes his hand. “Nice to meet you.”
He forces a smile on his face, feeling like ripping out his hair and scream in frustration on the inside.
After the dinner Jongdae assigns Chanyeol to be Sehun’s personal bodyguard.
“He’s not going to be your bodyguard Sehun! More like your mentor! It’s just that I can’t go into the Ravenclaw common room and Chanyeol will have to show you where to put your stuff and such. Also the stairs at Hogwarts move! Someone need to help you to find your way to your first lecture tomorrow!” Jongdae explains slowly to an annoyed Sehun. He’s got the stupidly worried look he always gets when Sehun isn’t happy or is doing something stupid and is acting stubborn about it. To Sehun that just makes everything worse. Beside them Joonmyun, who is apparently a prefect, is trying to gather the attention of the other first years to lead them to the Ravenclaw common room. Jongdae had somehow managed to find Chanyeol in the chaos and dragged him to where Sehun was seated before half of the students even got out of their seats. Chanyeol is still munching on some apple pie and Sehun is 100% sure he doesn’t need Chanyeol as his mentor.
“I don’t need Chanyeol as my mentor” Sehun says stubbornly and Joonmyun stops Jongdae from responding as he starts ushering Sehun and the other first years towards the exit of the grand hall.
The next day it turns out that Sehun does need a mentor.
Or at least a guide.
“Shit” He whispers as the stair under him moves again and leads him towards a completely different floor than he wanted to go to. Angrily he stomps up the remaining part of the stair, wondering why on earth anyone would think moving stairs was a good idea and why no one has given him a map. He reaches the end of the stair just as a short, tanned boy comes running out of opening in front of him and smashes into Sehun. For a horrible moment he thinks that they’re both going to fall backwards from the force but he manages to grip the railing before that happens.
“Watch where you’re going” He snaps, heart pounding wildly in his chest at his near death experience.
“Sorry.” The boy pants looking as horrified as Sehun feels. “It’s just that it’s my first day of school and I can’t be late for my first lesson. I am supposed to find the third floor and have Charms but the stair moved and…”
“Stop” Sehun irrupts the boys rambling and looks down on the boys tie. It’s green. “I get it. We’re in the same class”
The boys eyes widens and he looks down on Sehun’s tie.
“Oh” The boy says with a blink. “Aren’t Ravenclaw’s supposed to always be on time?”
“Aren’t Slytherin’s supposed to be superior bastards that knows their way around the castle?” Sehun retorts with a sneer. He’s hi-strung, hating being late and despising when others makes him feel stupid. Maybe it was too harsh because the boy’s expression turns into a puppy-eyed, sad one.
“I didn’t mean to sound rude” He says sadly and looks down on his feet. “I am just stressed, my sisters will scold me so much if I’m late for my first lesson. They’re already bitter because I ended up in Slytherin and not Gryffindor.”
Well, wrongly not ending up in Gryffindor is something Sehun can definitely relate to. He heaves a sigh and reaches forward his hand towards the boy.
“Well my name is Sehun anyway, maybe we can try and find the way together?” He says and the boy’s expression brightens.
“I’m Jongin, pleasure to meet you!” He says and shakes Sehun’s hand enthusiastically.
They end up finding their way to the right classroom just as the class is about to start and ends up sitting beside each other in the back.
From there on Jongin becomes Sehun’s friend and by far the best Slytherin he’s met. Jongin is nice, ambitious and hardworking, with a passion for charms. Sehun also meets Tao, a seemingly shy first year Gryffindor who turns out to be sort of a diva once they’ve gotten used to each other. They meet during a potions lesson when Sehun succeeds in completing the potion they’re making perfectly and gets praises from the teacher. Tao shyly sits beside him during the next class, casually chatting with him. By the time Sehun realises that Tao is just sitting beside him to copy everything he does they’re already good friends and Sehuns can no longer tell him to fuck up without losing a friend.
His only friends in Ravenclaw are Chanyeol and Joonmyun but Sehun is fine with that. Joonmyun has tried to make him talk to the rest of the Ravenclaw first years and Sehun has but he doesn’t really like them. Most of them focus too much on their studies and their view of ‘fun’ is having discussions about the newest, improved anti-vampire bite elixir. Joonmyun had given him an amused smile and told him that most Ravenclaws grow up sooner or later and then they’ll be easier to hang around.
Sehun sort of doubts that.
He’s fine without them though. Most of his free time is spent in the library or roaming around Hogwarts with Jongin and Tao and occasionally Jongdae, Baekhyun and Chanyeol. Sometimes it’s only him and Jongdae and Sehun likes those trips the best.
Hogwarts is even better than expected, with hidden passages and rooms that only existed occasionally. Jongdae proudly showed Sehun how to get into the Room of requirement and most of the secret passages, whispering to Sehun that an older, recently graduated Gryffindor student named James Potter had showed him a map of the entire castle with all hidden stairs and corridors and rooms. The older had seen Jongdae following him to find said shortcuts one night and decided to help his fellow Gryffindor out. Unfortunately the other had graduated Hogwarts before Jongdae had the chance to steal the map.
“But I have this idea that we might be able to make a similar map” Jongdae whispered one night with shining eyes and Sehun pondered on the idea for a while.
“How would you even make such a map?” He muttered and then suggested that maybe they should ask Joonmyun about it. Jongdae had looked at him weirdly and placed a hand on his shoulder.
“If you know what’s good for you, make sure not to tell Joonmyun about most things” He says seriously.
Sehunj only understands why later, when he tells Joonmyun about how he and Jongin sneaked out after dark to see if they could fix the staircases so that they didn’t move so much. They had failed of course but Joonmyun still took 10 points from both Jongin and Sehun and threatened to tell the teachers if they ever did it again. Jongin didn’t talk to any of them for a week and Sehun swears to himself to never tell Joonmyun about anything he does that can get him in problem.
So he doesn’t.
He doesn’t tell Joonmyun when he and Jongin sneaks out and practices spells after dark, even if they never can make the stairs stand still. He doesn’t tell Joonmyun about how he spends endless nights in the astronomy tower with Jongdae, just talking about home and how they miss their parents even though Hogwarts is the best thing that ever happened to them. He doesn’t tell Joonmyun about pranks with Baekhyun and Chanyeol (he still don’t like them but he can’t deny that Baekhyun have really good ideas.) and he says nothing when Joonmyun complains about how someone managed to sneak into the prefects bathroom and turn the whole thing pink (“but I thought you liked pink Joonmyun?”, “Park Chanyeol if you had anything to do with this I swear I will tell the headmaster!”)
But Hogwarts isn’t only hanging out with friends and pranking. It’s also endless afternoons of studying, increasingly hard classes and reading up on their defence against the dark arts homework during breakfast five minutes before the lesson starts.
Sehun’s favourite and also worst subject is Herbology. It’s his worst because he hasn’t gotten one ounce of green fingers and his favourite because Professor Longbottom is the teacher. Professor Longbottom has turned into his adult mentor in the wizarding world and he always makes sure that Sehun and the rest of the students are feeling well. Sehun is not the only student that adores the professor but he still feels like he’s special in a good way when Professor Longbottom smiles at him.
Surprisingly for almost everyone Sehun gets excellent grades and praises by most teachers. The only one not surprised is Jongdae who only smiles smugly and pats Sehuns back while saying “I told you he was smart guys!”
Sehun’s heart flutters and he blushes a bright red as Jongdae hugs him tightly.
When he comes home his parents frame his grades and put them on a wall.
(“But Sehun, I don’t understand: what exactly do you do in Charms? Aren’t all magic charms?”)
Year 2
Somehow Jongdae ends up as the seeker of Gryffindor’s quidditch team. It's all okay with Sehun until Jongdae's first match approaches and Sehun hears a Ravenclaw next to him loudly tell his friends about the last time Gryffindor and Slytherin faced each other.
“Why would you even want to play quidditch?” Sehun mutters and folds his hands across his chest as he glares at the stars like it’s their fault that Jongdae is going to play quidditch.
“Because it’s fun Sehun!” Jongdae whines and pouts. The distant half-full moon illuminates his face and the gesture makes his cheekbones look even sharper. Sehun wants to trace their edge with his finger but refrains himself from doing so and focus on the conversation.
“But it’s dangerous!” He counters, just as whiny and Jongdae rolls his eyes.
"I have been on several practices and you have known about this for a month now! What changed?" Jongdae asks and Sehun thinks about the last Gryffindor seeker that had gotten a bludger in the back of his head and hadn't woken up for several weeks afterwards.
"There are differences between a game and a practice" Sehun mutters, crossing his arms and looking away from Jongdae and up at the stars again. If he concentrates he can hear Baekhyun and Chanyeol arguing from a classroom downstairs, even though he and Jongae is lying on the top of the astronomy tower. He doesn't bother doing something about it though, if the idiots can't even remember to close a window they deserve to get caught.
"Yeah I guess they are" Jongdae whispers and there is a change in his voice that makes Sehun turn and look at him again. Jongdae is looking up at the sky and the stars lights up his face in a way that makes Sehun's stomach turn as much as it did the first time they sneaked up to lie under the stars. His eyes are distant and there is a worried frown on his forehead and Sehun reaches for his hand out of instinct. Jongdae takes his hand and squeezes it slightly.
“I really want to win this.” He whispers, still not looking at Sehun. “You might think it’s stupid and dangerous but I’m really excited about quidditch and I want my first match to go great.” He continues and his voice wavers at the end.
It's the most vulnerable Sehun's seen him in a long time and Sehun suddenly realises, with startling clarity, that he’ll do anything to help Jongdae win.
“You’re coming to the game, right Sehunnie?”
“Of course”
“What is that on your hand?” Joonmyun asks and Sehun quickly tries to hide his hand in the arms of his robe.
“Nothing” He says and flinches as it comes out way too quick. Joonmyun manages to grab his hand and yanks it out to see the dried ink on his skin.
“Sehun what is this? Are these charms?” He asks and Sehun stubbornly keeps his eyes on the quidditch field in front of them.
“Just trying to remember some spells for class” He mutters, hoping Joonmyun will buy it.
Of course he doesn’t-
“Sehun I have went to that class, none of these are spells you learn in first or second grade, I don’t…” He trails of and Sehun glances at him and sees that he’s staring intently at one of the words on Sehun’s arm. Beside him Chanyeol tries to peak over his shoulder.
“Sehun” Joonmyun starts slowly. “Is this what I think it is?”
“I don’t know” Sehun answers and tries to yank his arm back but Joonmyun’s grip on him is firm. Chanyeol makes a noise of recognition.
“Isn’t that one the spell for making a flying object stop?” He blurts out, pointing on one of the words. Sehun wants to kill him.
“Sehun…” Joonmyun starts warningly.
“I will not let Jongdae get hurt because of some stupid game okay? And Gryffindor needs to win this.” He says, wiping his head to glare at his two friends. Chanyeol’s eyes widen comically and Joonmyun frowns at him.
“You know that it is illegal to cheat during a quidditch game, right Sehun? Depending on what you do you can get in some serious trouble, maybe even get expelled” Joonmyun says slowly.
“I don’t care. How will they even know that it was me?” Sehun mutters and this time when he yanks his arm back Joonmyun lets him go.
“Sehun” Chanyeol says slowly. “I…Look I understand now that you really, really like Jongdae but you can’t do this okay? You’ll just have to trust Jongdae okay?” Her tries softly.
“And Jongdae won’t get seriously hurt, no matter what you have heard it is quite uncommon in quidditch for the seeker to be severely hurt.” Joonmyun comforts.
Sehun says nothing, only watches in tense silence as the two teams walk out on the court. His wand is burning in his breast pocket as the captains shake hands. He have to forcefully keep himself from hiding his eyes behind his hand or standing up and swinging his wand to stop the whistle blows shortly after and the players kick off the ground.
Quidditch is a fast paced game. Sehun has no idea what is happening half of the time and he realises with a sinking feeling that he probably wouldn’t be able to help Jongdae in time if something where to happened, even if Joonmyun weren’t sitting behind him, ready to stop him at every moment. The realisation makes him nauseous and he jumps in his seat every time a bludger is even close to Jongdae. All around him Gryffindors and the other people supporting the team against Slytherin cheers and jumps up and down. Gryffindor is in the lead but Sehun barely cares, eyes never leaving Jongdae.
“You must really like him” Joonmyun mumbles and Sehun only nods distractedly. He can see Joonmyun smiling from the corner of his eye and flushes slightly. “If it helps Jongdae is a really good flier.”
It does help. Sehun still has a hard time concentrating on the game but he can tell that Slytherin is catching up by the amount of groans around him and cheers from the other side. Then Jongdae makes a sharp turn in the air and shoots off across the field. The excitement rises on their bleachers and Sehun joins the screams and jumping as Jongdae and Slytherin seeker races across the field. They make a sharp dive and Sehun’s heart stops as Jongdae rapidly approaches the ground.
Jongdae’s outstretched hand closes around something and he tries to straighten his broomstick. He’s slightly too late and half crashes into the ground. Sehun is worried for half a moment as Jongdae stumbles to the ground but then he rises again, jumping up and down with the stitch in his hand and a bright smile on his face. Sehun lets out a sigh of relief as the whistle is blown to stop the game.
The part after the game is a shocked daze of Sehun trying to get down to Jongdae and congratulate him. When he meets his best friend outside the locker rooms Jongdae immediately throws himself over Sehun in an overwhelming hug.
“We won Sehun, we won!!” He screeches right in Sehun’s ear and Sehun almost pulls back until Jongdae places a smacking kiss on his cheek. “Thank you for coming” He whispers and then pulls off Sehun to run away and cheer with Baekhyun. Sehun stands rooted to the spot, cheeks burning until Joonmyun walks up to him with an amused smile.
“I think I like quidditch” He whispers and Joonmyun bursts out laughing.
Year 3
Sehun has officially decided that he likes Baekhyun less than Chanyeol.
“Oh come on Sehunnie” Joonmyun says with an eye roll as Chanyeol laughs beside them. “You’ve been complaining about Baekhyun since before of summer! Yes, he asked your precious Jongdae to stay at his place during July because they’re best friends and Jongdae’s parents wanted to go to Africa for a month, big deal! You get to see him now so stop whining and just enjoy being back at Hogwarts okay? Why don’t you try some chicken legs, I believe they’re just getting better and better for each year.” He continues and gestures towards the chicken further down the table. Sehun glares at him but those chicken legs looks delicious so he decides to humour Joonmyun for the moment and turns towards a girl that’s right by the chicken plate.
“Excuse me, can you please pass me some chicken legs?” He asks and reaches his plate forward with a smile (or as much of a smile as strangers get from Oh Sehun). The girl looks up and blushes a bright red as her eyes meet Sehun. She mumbles something he can’t understand or hear in the noise filling the grand hall during the welcome dinner, before she takes his plate with shaking hands. Sehun is a bit surprised at the reaction and when he turns back to his friends after he’s gotten the chicken and thanked the girl, Joonmyun and Chanyeol are both spotting similar smug grins on their faces.
“What?” Sehun asks and frowns at them, which is hard while stuffing his face with delicious chicken.
“It seems like some girls think that summer has been good on you” Chanyeol says while wiggling his eyebrows. It takes Sehun a second or two to realise what Chanyeol means but when he does he feels his face heat up and he looks away from his friends.
“Shut up” He mutters, trying to not sound too embarrassed but Joonmyun and Chanyeol still laughs at him.
Sehun doesn’t meet Jongdae until after the dinner. He didn’t see his best friend on the Hogwarts express and Sehun thanks the god for his new height as he scans over the heads in the entrance hall to find Jongdae. He absentmindedly notes some people looking at him and guesses that it’s just because that he’s taller than most others right now. He finds Jongdae by the stairs, talking to some guy he doesn’t know, and makes his way towards him. A girl stumbles into him, airily apologizing with fluttering eyelashes and Sehun barely has the time to apologize back in his haste to get to Jongdae. He completely misses the disappointed look she gets as he hurries away. He reaches Jongdae and immediately throws his arms around his friends shoulder in a back hug.
“Jongdae!” He croons happily in his ear. The boy Jongdae talked to smiles as Jongdae stutters and turns around to look at Sehun.
“S-sehun!” Jongdae sounds weird. “Hi! Wow you’ve gotten tall and…” He swallows and Sehun smiles confused at him.
“And?” He prods and is Jongdae blushing?
“Nothing?” Jongdae really sounds weird. “Anyway, have you met Yixing? This is Yixing, Baekhyun’s neighbour. Yixing this is Sehun.”
“I understood that” Yixing says with a grin and Sehun feels like he’s missing out on something as Jongdae turns bet red and punches Yixings arm.
“Nice to meet you” Sehun says and casually lets his arm creep up to settle against Jongdae’s waist as he reaches to shake Yixings hand.
“He’s in Hufflepuff with Luhan and Minseok” Jongdae explains and something about the way Jongdae says ‘Minseok’ makes Sehun frown.
“Cool, are you going to the Gryffindor common room?” He says, forcing a smile and hoping that the other will say no.
“Yeah” Jongdae says and Sehun’s smile falls. “I need to uuh, unpack and stuff” He says hurriedly and hurries away from Sehun with a short ‘goodbye’ thrown over his shoulder. Sehun looks after him with a pout.
“You seem smitten” Yixing comments casually. “You should ask him out." He continues with a smile and Sehun gapes at the other boy as he smiles and walks away.
Sehun is starting to dislikes girls. There is a group of them that has been starting to follow him around, giggling and calling him ‘Sehun-oppa’ even though Sehun has told them that he was adopted from Korea and has never actually been there. He's pretty sure he's been complaining about them to all of his friends and he's therefore taken off guard when Tao asks:
“So uuh Sehun, do you like girls?”
For some reason Tao looks nervous, which is very weird because the Gryffindor rarely looks anything but slightly superior or on the verge of crying. Sehun looks up at him with a confusion and tilts his head slightly to the side.
“Not really, I mean girls in general are nice I guess but I don’t really like that type” He says and nods towards the giggling girls some table away from them. “They’re annoying. They have been following me since the beginning of the year.”
“Yes but Sehun do you like, like girls. You know romantically.” Tao says and rolls his eyes at Sehun, still sounding slightly uncomfortable with the situation. Sehun stares incredulously at him.
“I like Jongdae romantically” He states. “You know this.”
“Yeah but…” Tao stutters and his cheeks are starting to turn pink. “A-are you like…I mean… are you attracted to girls, like girls and boys? I mean could you see yourself falling for someone else than Jongdae?”
Sehun actually bursts out laughing at that, a laugh that sounds slightly hysterical even to him and makes Tao jump in his seat.
“Tao, I haven’t been attracted to anyone else than Jongdae in my entire life. You have seen me, you know me. I am completely pathetic when it comes to Jongdae. I’ve never been even close to attracted to someone else than Jongdae and I am not sure I ever will. I’ll just be like alone forever and stand there all miserable when he meets the love of his life.” Sehun tries to sound amused but fails miserably at the last part and has to look down at the table, not able to see the reaction in Tao’s face as his own burns with embarrassment from the confession.
"So you're like Jongdae sexual?" Tao asks after a tense silence and Sehun groans and puts his head in his hands.
"That sounds super cheesy Tao! Why does everything need to have a label? Why can't I just like Jongdae and that's it?" He questions and looks through his fingers at a blushing Tao.
"Yeah okay sorry." Tao says with an apologetic grimace. "I was just wondering because you're getting all this attention and..." Tao glanches towards the girls giggling at the table and blushes even more. At first Sehun doesn't understand why Tao trailed off but then he connects the dots.
"Wait so you like one of those girls?" He asks gleefully and Tao swats his arms in embarrassment.
"Stop it!" He hisses and Sehun grins evilly.
"Which one is it? The blond one? The one with the pony tail? Or the one who is a little chubby? I can see how you'd like her she's sort of cute or..."
"She's not chubby, she's the perfect size" Tao hisses before he realises what he just said and slaps a hand over his mouth. Sehub's grin widens even more and Tao looks absolutely horrified.
"Wait until I tell Baekhyun" Sehun sing-songs and Tao swats his arm in anger, which only makes Sehun laugh at him.
"I hate you" Tao whispers and hides his head in his arms. Sehun only hums and goes back to his homework with a smile. Tao looks up a little later with a contemplating look while Sehun is absentmindedly trying to think of a way to hook up Tao with the cute girl.
"You know, I really think Jongdae might like you back" Tao says softly and Sehun tenses. He gives Tao a short, disbelieving look but says nothing. He doesn't really want to disagree when he's not-so-secretly hoping that Tao is right.
When Jongdae asks if Sehun wants to go with him, as in just the two of them, on his first Hogsmeade trip Sehun says yes without thinking. He proceeds to spend the rest of the week before the trip planning how they’re going to visit Honeydukes and Zonko’s Joke Shop and how Sehun’s going to dare to hold Jongdae’s hand as they walk through the village. He daydreams about sitting close to Jongdae and confess his true feelings for the boy in a secluded corner of The Three Broomsticks Inn. He even briefly considers taking Jongdae to Madam Puddifoot’s Tea Shop but decids against it since he sort of pictures it as pink and horrible cringe-worthy. Besides, there is after all the chance that Jongdae might reject him.
“Are you even sure that Jongdae sees this as a date?” Tao asks critically one day before the trip in their secluded corner of the library. Sehun simple shrugs at him, too busy feeling guilty as the girl he just rejected looks like he’s about to cry as she sits by her friends at a close table. “Because you shouldn’t get your hopes up too much, what if he only sees it as two friends hanging out together? Does he even know that you’re gay?”
“He doesn’t know that I am gay.” Sehun answers with a grimace. “And he probably doesn’t see this as a date butI will tell him though, I think it’s time.” He continues and Tao makes a noise of surprise.
"Really? How?" He asks excitedly and Sehun blushes.
"I have plans" He mutters and smacks Tao's arm when the other makes a cooing sound.
"Well you know that your love life have all my support" Tao says and makes a kissy face. Sehun rolls his eyes at him but is secretly happy that Tao is believing in him. It makes the whole thing a little easier, or so he thinks.
Sehun meets Jongdae outside the Hogwarts gates the next day. He tries to calm his heart and ignore his stupid feelings. It’s just Jongdae. A normal day with his best friend with the minimal addition that they’re hopefully more than friends by the end of the day.
“Hi” Jongdae says with a bright smile and Sehun mumbles back a reply, trying to sound normal but it comes out strained to him. "You ready?" He asks and when Sehun nods he turns around and starts walking towards the village, chatting about the different stores.
Sehun nervously tries to act normal as they walk down the road, smiling and looking like he's as excited as Jongdae is and not like he's having an inner breakdown.
He is so concentrated on his own behaviour that he doesn't notice Jongdae acting weird until they reach the village. It's when Jongdae lets out a high-pitched, weirdly sounding laugh at Sehun's joke that Sehun notices that something is off. Jongdae doesn't look like he normally does. He looks tense and his eyes flickers around, looking everywhere but at Sehun.
"Hey Jongdae, is something wrong?" He asks and Jongdae laughs that weird laugh again.
"What? No, nothing is wrong, why would it?" He says and quickly links his arm with Sehun. "Lets go to Zonko's, you have to see that store! And I need to stock up." He continues and grins at Sehun briefly before dragging him down the street.
Sehun willingly follows but can't shake of the feeling that something is wrong. Jongdae is jittery. He jumps when Sehun tries and put am arm around his waist and brush it off as that he just got excited at the new stink bombs at Zonko's. He also talks more than normally and Sehun has no idea when he's supposed to confess if Jongdae barely stops talking to take a breath. He doesn't even know if he wants to confess when Jongdae is acting like something is severely wrong and he tries to cover it up. It's with a sinking feeling that Sehun starts to realise that maybe Jongdae doesn't really want to spend the day with him. Maybe he wanted to stay inside and take care of whatever bothers him and only went with Sehun because he felt obligated to. It leaves a sour taste in Sehun's mouth that doesn't leave even as they walk around Honeydukes and tries all their free samples.
By the time they end up at the Three Broomsticks Inn Sehun's had enough.
"Jongdae" He says and the other looks up from his Butterbeer. "What's wrong? You've been acting strange all day." He mumbles and Jongdae looks down again.
"Sorry. It's just..." He hesitates and glances up at Sehun. The thought that Jongdae feels like he can't tell Sehun everything annoys Sehun and in a moment of bravery he reaches forward and takes the hand Jongdae rests on the table in his.
"You know that you can tell me everything" He says seriously and Jongdae must feel his rapidly beating pulse through the palm of his hand. Jongdae looks down at their hand and worries his bottom lip between his teeth.
"It's just..." He starts but they are irrupted as a girl with rosy cheeks and long, wavy, brown hair walks up to them.
"Hi' She says breathlessly and Sehun thinks that he recognizes her from somewhere. The greeting is clearly directed at him but he still glances at Jongdae before answering.
"Hi?" He answers, not letting go of Jongdae's hand.
Sehun has always been taught to be polite to strangers but as the girl beams at him, introduces herself and sits down at their table he can't help but want to tell her to fuck off. Can she not see that she is intruding?
"It's just that there is so few tables free so can I and my friends sit here?" She asks and bats her eyelashes at him. Sehun doesn't know what to do and helplessly looks at Jongdae.
"It's fine" Jongdae says shortly without looking at either of them and let go of Sehun's hand.
Sehun can tell that it's so not fine.
"Great!" The girl breathes out with a triumphant glint in her eyes and before Sehun can come up with an excuse their table is invaded by four more girls. The moment is completely destroyed and the girls more or less ignores Jongdae in favour of twirling their hair and questions in Sehun's direction. Sehun has no idea what to do and he tries to laugh and be polite and bring Jongdae into the conversation but he's feeling a headache throbbing at his temples from the smell of their perfumes and it's hard to think.
"I think I need to go" Jongdae says abruptly after less than 20 minutes and stands up, still not looking at Sehun. "It's getting late and I need to do some homework."
"But it's only 3 p.m and you haven't showed me the post office" Sehun tries as he also stands up.
"We can show it to you!" One of the girls whose name he's forgotten says and her friends nods enthusiastically.
"I really have to go" Jongdae says and grabs his coat to leave.
"I'll just go with you then, Goodbye" Sehun answers hastily and take his coat to follow his best friend out. Jongdae is walking fast and Sehun praises his long legs for being able to keep up.
"Jongdae..."He starts as they speed in the direction of Hogwarts.
"It's fine Sehun" Jongdae asks and his tone effectively cuts off Sehun's attempt at conversation.
In the end they end up going home in silence without Sehun having confessed even 2% of his feelings.
When Joonmyun goes to look for Sehun for dinner he finds the other with puffy eyes under his bed covers.
"I was never made for Gryffindor. I am the most unbrave man ever." Sehun mumbles and Joonmyun gentle pats his head in consolation. It doesn't help much.
“So are you guys coming to the Ravenclaw vs Hufflepuff game today?” Jongin asks with a broad smile as he sits down next to Sehun at the Ravenclaw table, ignoring the angry looks his Slytherin attire gets. Sehun looks up from his breakfast in surprise and frowns at the other boy.
“No, why would I?” He asks, generally surprised and Chanyeol snorts in amusement as Jongin blinks at Sehun in confusion.
“Because it’s your house competing! And it’s quidditch! I thought you liked quidditch?” He says and Joonmyun looks up with a small smile.
“The only reason he goes to any quidditch game is to make sure Jongdae doesn’t fall off his broomstick or hurts himself” Chanyeol says and smirks at Sehun. “He’s so whipped it’s barely funny anymore”
“Who is?” Baekhyun plops up from behind them with a large smile and Sehun ignores him in favour of looking straight at Jongdae, who looks back at him awkwardly.
“Hi Jongdae, how are you?” He pointedly asks and Baekhyun rolls his eyes at him. Sehun hasn't talked to Baekhyun since he took Jongdae home during summer.
“Hi Sehun. We’re just going down to the arena to watch the game, are you going soon? We're going to be cheering for Ravenclaw so we’ll be sitting in your section!” Jongdae answers and gestures shyly towards the scarf around his neck, which Sehun now notices has been turned blue for the game, and smiles at Sehun. “Although Minseok will probably aim a Bludger at my face as soon as he sees it. I don't really care but Hufflepuff needs to lose if we’re going to win this year.” He continues and Baekhyun nods in agreement.
“We’re going soon” Sehun answers, aware of how Jongin’s yaw drop in surprise, but as Jongdae's face lights up in a brighter smile he can't find it in himself to care. “Chanyeol just need to finish eating the rest of the food on this table.” Chanyeol lets out an offended yelp around the food in his mouth.
“Great! Baekhyun and I will save you seats!” Jongdae says and Sehun doesn't think he’s imagining the blush on Jongdae's cheeks. He nods and Jongdae continues down the corridor with a 'see you there', Baekhyun trailing after him after a wink directed at Chanyeol which makes the tall Ravenclaw choke on his food. Joonmyun waves them off before turning towards Sehun again.
“Now Sehun, you know the rules: No fiddling with Huffelpuffs players or any other part of the quidditch game just to make sure Gryffindor still has a chance in the quidditch final. Especially not Minseok or Yixing, none of them are even close to dating Jongdae so don’t even think about trying to hurt them because I will notice” Joonmyun says and Sehun rolls his eyes. “And close your mouth Jongin, are you trying to catch flies?”
“How have I not noticed this before? I’ve known this guy for 3 years now!” Jongin whispers and Chanyeol pats him on the back with a large grin.
“It’s because you’re a Slytherin, everyone knows that you’re all stupid!”
Sehun thinks that’s a bit overzealous coming from the most stupid Ravenclaw ever. Jongin seems to agree because he snorts and elbows Chanyeol in the stomach, making him spew out food all over the table.
The game goes well. Ravenclaw wins as their seeker snatches the stitch right in front of Yixings, whose huffelpuff’s seeker, face. Sehun cheers with the rest of his house and the Gryffindor’s who now got the chance to win the house cup again. Beside him Jongin sulks because Slytherins chances to win for the second year in a row just minimized. Sehun half-heartedly tries to comfort him before dragging his friend away from the chaos that is their bleachers. He and Jongin both hates crowded, loud places and they sit on the grass away from the stadium to wait for the rest of their friends to finish their small celebration.
Chanyeol and Joonmyun joins them not long after, dragging a scrowling Kyungsoo behind them and Jongin’s face immediately turns a cute shade of pink. They all settle down, waiting for Jongdae and talking about the game. Kyungsoo and Jongin are both pretty grumpy, or as grumpy as Jongin can be with Kyungsoo beside him, from the outcome of the game but the rest just laughs at them.
It takes almost quarter of an hour before Sehun sees Jongdae coming walking from the stadium and when he does he feels his heart stop. Jongdae is walking next to Yixing, holding his hand and talking lowly into the other boy’s ear. Yixing has his head lowered so Sehun can’t see his expression or what he answers Jongdae but whatever it is it makes Jongdae stop and force Yixing to stop as well. Jongdae puts his hands on Yixing cheeks and forces him to look up, expression serious and eyes sad.
It looks like they’re going to kiss.
Sehun doesn’t want to see.
“I have to go” Sehun says and scrambles up from his sitting position. He turns around and flees from his friends, ignoring Jongin’s shouts after him.
Sehun ends up in the greenhouse helping Professor Longbottom watering his plants. The Professor hadn’t said anything when Sehun came stumbling into the green house, only ushered the giggling hufflepuff girls out of there and handed Sehun a water spritz in silence.
Sehun ends up telling him everything anyway. Professor Longbottom has been the closest to an extra wizard mentor Sehun's had ever since he entered Hogwarts and the only teacher he's felt close to ever. Somehow it’s not awkward to tell him about his feelings for Jongdae.
“I just don’t know what to do!” He finishes and spritzes a flower with water, pushing the handle a little bit too hard so that it cracks. Professor Longbottom gives him a new spritz before he answers.
“Sometimes you just got to tackle a problem head on Sehun” He says with a small smile, the sun hitting him from behind and making his eyes glitter in the sun. "It's time to stop beating around the bush and just tell Jongdae how you feel." Sehun snorts at this.
“This is probably why you got sorted into Gryffindor and I didn’t” Sehun mutters and sprits some water on the closest plant. “I am can't even 'stop beating around the bush' and ask my best friend out on a date.”
Professor Longbottom laughs and put a comforting hand on Sehun’s shoulder.
“Sehun, you could be one of the bravest people on this earth and you’d still have problems asking Jongdae out. It’s not easy to be in love and it’s even harder to confess being in love without knowing if the other person feels the same. Love is the highest form of human vulnerability and if you weren’t scared I wouldn’t be sure if you actually liked the boy.” He laughs again and grins at Sehun. “Tell you what, I am a Gryffindor and it still took me years to gather up the courage to ask Hanna, or as I guess you know her as Madam Abbott, out. She actually rejected me the first time but it didn’t kill my spark and I guess she eventually started liking me back. I will never regret asking her that first time though, even though she said no it was a huge relief to get it out of my system.” His grin softens to a small smile. “So Sehun, I think you’ve hidden your feelings long enough, don’t you agree?”
Sehun is silent for a while and absentmindedly spritz at a plant while trying to sort his feelings out
“I guess I do” He eventually concludes and looks down at the plant in front of him to see how one of the flowers open up in a burst of colour. “Look Professor! It’s blooming!”
“Good job Sehun” Professor Longbottom says and pats his shoulder again. “Now run along and go find Jongdae. Even if it turns out he’s together with young Yixing I am sure you’ll feel better afterwards.”
“Yes Professor” Sehun says and gets ready to leave. When he’s taken of his apron he turns back to the professor and breaks out in one of his rare, genuin smiles. “Thank you Professor Longbottom.”
“You’re welcome Sehun” Professor Longbottom says and Sehun turns around to leave. Just as he reaches the door he hears the Professor call after him again.
“Yes Professor?” He asks when he turns around and finds Professor Longbottom looking at him unsurely.
“Sehun” He starts. “Just know that whatever happens in your life you need to remember who you are and what is important. Even if Jongdae rejects you I want you to know that it's not worth doing something...not thought through. You're a smart kid Sehun. Use your intelligence the right way."
Sehun blinks at the professor, not really understanding what he means but nods and bids goodbye once again. He can wonder about professor Longbottom latter. Right now he has a mission.
Sehun finds Jongdae alone in the library, not reading but simply frowning out of the window.
“Hi” He says, trying to sound casual with his heart in his throat. Jongdae’s head flips around so fast Sehun’s worried that he’s hurt himself for a minute. He seems okay though, albeit kind of confused.
“Hi” Jongdae answers slowly.
“I think I love you”
Smooth Sehun, really fucking smooth.
Jongdae’s eyes turn impossibly large and Sehun panics.
“Sorry, I didn't mean to say it that way. I mean that I like you. A lot. In a non-friend way” Sehun is rambling but he can’t stop himself. “And I’d like to take you on a real Hogsmead date-thingy sometime. If you want to. I know you might not want to because you see us as only friends and I am sorry if I just destroyed that. I swear if you don’t like me just tell me and nothing will change. I just needed to tell you and…”
“I thought you were straight” Jongdae irrupts him.
..What?
“What?” Sehun blurts out and watches in fascination as Jongdae’s face turns a pretty shade of pink.
“Well, I just guessed that you were straight since you seemed to enjoy all the girls flirting with you” Jongdae mutters and looks anywhere except Sehun.
“But I told you I hated it.” Sehun says slowly, trying to get Jongdae to look at him as he sits down next to him.
“Well yeah but then we went to Hogsmead and you just sort of seemed like you thought they were more interesting, or like not like that I just…”
“I didn’t think they were more interesting then you.” Sehun irrupts him. “I was just nervous and you acted weird and…” He tries to explain but loses his words half way.
“Well I was nervous too” Jongdae confesses and his ears are bright red. “I just had this thought that it maybe could be a date.” He continues very quickly and lets out a weird laugh again.
Everything is spinning out of Sehun’s control very fast.
“Wait you like me?” Sehun asks slowly, mouth slightly agape.
“Well duh” Jongdae says weakly. “I thought everyone knew that.”
“So you don’t like Yixing” Sehun just needs to reassure himself but Jongdae seems taken back.
“What, no?”
“Or Minseok?”
“Minseok? Why would I ever…”
“So you like me?”
“I just told you…”
“So like, like me”
“Yes! Jesus Christ Oh Sehun shut up! I like you, okay? And I have for a while even before you turned unfairly handsome and tall.” Jongdae says loudly, face bright red as he throws his head up in annoyance. Sehun couldn’t care less about Jongdae’s annoyance. He doesn’t try and hide his smile as Jongdae continues to mumble for himself and looks at anything but Sehun.
Sehun is pretty sure the librarian would throw them out if he kissed Jongdae right here now ,and anyway he’s pretty sure he doesn’t dare to do that, so he settles for leaning forward and grabbing Jongdae’s hand in his, trying to somewhat channel his feelings to the other boy.
"I can't believe you just said that" He says happily and Jongdae makes a noise of distress and punches his arm a little bit too hard.
Sehun still likes him.
“You’re going home this summer right?” Sehun asks as he lies on the grass next to the lake with his head in Jongdae’s lap, looking up at the older boy with a slight frown.
“Yeah” Jongdae answers while lazily looking out over the lake. “I need to meet my parents anyway.”
“Good” Sehun says with a smile and Jongdae looks down at him with a grin. “Summer was super boring when you were at Baekhyun’s.”
“Aww, did you miss me?” Jongdae coos and ruffles his hair. Sehun grins and gets up from Jongdae’s lap, leaning in to steal a quick kiss.
“Just a little” He mumbles as they break apart and Jongdae grins that half-dazed, happy smile that turns Sehun’s inside into a fluttering mess and all the muscles in his body into jelly.
“Look guys" An anoying disturbance comes from in front of them. "I am super happy that you’ve gotten over that stupid skinny love state you were in and has gone over to a sickly adorable couple but can you please stop shoving your happiness in our faces? Please? This is a sincere request from a forever single soul.” Baekhyun continues to whine across from them and Jongdae breaks out in a laugh. Sehun glances at Chanyeol and the tall boy looks like he’s contemplating confessing on the spot. Instead he turns away with a little pinkness on his cheeks and a frown on his forehead. Sehun hides his smug grin on Jongdae’s shoulder.
Chanyeol will gather up some courage eventually, or maybe Baekhyun will first since he is the Gryffindor after all.
Then again, confessing seems to have very little to do with being brave and more about just doing it.
